The allotment society is a 25sq m plot of land on the Park campus requiring lots of new people with energy and commitment to take the project forward. This ideal location is a 30-second walk from the halls of residence, which is home to 300 students, appealing to new and existing students. No experience or equipment in the gardening world is required, come along and we will get stuck right in and teach you along the way!
Homebase, the DIY chain, have supplied generous funds to move this society forward. Now is an exciting and changing time to join. The possibilities are endless, with finances to make positive changes to this large, dynamic area.
Edible fruits of your labour are free, the only deal is, when you water your own plants, you water everyone else’s too! If surplus produce is grown, future possibilities could include offering seasonal vegetable boxes to students, and even offering produce to the university's catering facilities.
Our university is unique in the fact we have a large area of open, unpolluted space on campus. This attractive area is not only a garden but also a social space. A break from your academic studies in the garden will allow your mind to rest and for you to appreciate the beautiful environment we are so fortunate to have. On a beautiful sunny day you can absorb the open space and relax in the sun.
This is a student led project, therefore members of the society will be able to make the decisions and determine the running of the society. Although union staff will be on hand if you require help. Not only is the produce a benefit, this experience will prove valuable to your CV and will help towards you gaining an EGG (Employable Gloucestershire Graduates) award that will sit on your HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Record).
Sustainability is important and underpins every aspect of our lives. Growing healthy, fresh food for yourself and others will take skills and passion that you can carry on into later life. This positively relates to those of you on sports-related courses where an understanding of nutrition and health are important, as well as meeting your dietary requirements.
This society will allow you to grow your own fruit and veg in a pleasant environment and has the right equipment: providing the acquisition of new skills, knowledge of how to grow food, the strengthening of links with local community groups in the area and the reduction of food miles.
The SU Allotment Society is looking for volunteers to help run the Society at UoG this year. If you like growing things and want to find out more about growing your own fruit and veg then why not get involved? The SU Allotment Society has been given this plot of land and large greenhouse on Park Campus that is free for all students to use… let’s take a tour and see what’s growing…
