Why isn't it in a big tent like last year?

Last year the Freshers' Ball was too loud and the council served us with a noise abatement order that means we can't have live music outside on campus for a good few years unless we want a fine of £20,000. This means we had to look at other venues.

Why can't second and third years go?

Cheltenham Town Hall is the largest venue apart from the Racecourse. The capacity is 1000 and last year 1300 people attended the Freshers' Ball so we have to make it first years only for the first week of sales to make sure freshers who want to go can get a ticket. There are 400 less Freshers this year than last year so there may well be spare tickets.

So why not have it at the racecourse?

The capacity at the racecourse is 5000 so 1300 people rattle around a little and if we only got that many in we would make a large loss or would have to charge a lot more. Last year the Summer Ball lost us £25,000. We don't mind losing this much money at the end of the year if we know we can afford to lose it but we can't lose that much on the Freshers Ball. we would love a 1500 - 2000 capacity venue somewhere but there isn't one.

My friend is going to X University and they have Coldplay, The Beatles and Lady Gaga at their ball and it only costs £10.

The lineup is rubbish

Who would you rather have? Whoever you say there will be students who are unhappy. I think the lineup is rather brilliant and a great mix of acts all of whom are really good live. I think everyone who goes will have an awesome time. However we would love your input. We will be having Events meetings a couple of weeks into term which we will advertise on the website. We would love you to come and help us with the Winter and Summer Balls and our Comedy and gig nights.
