► how to submit a motion for council

Motions submitted to council must follow a specific structure consisting of the following three sections:

This Union Notes: Outline your issue.

This Union Believes: Provide evidence to support your proposal.

This Union Resolves: Describe the actions that the Union must take.

Motions must also include the name of the proposer as well as that of a secondary.

Remember: Although your motion doesn’t need to be very long, please make sure that there is enough detail so that we all understand what you are proposing and can discuss it fully.
Motions should be emailed as a word document to cagbehenu@glos.ac.uk at least one week prior to the next council meeting so that they can be viewed on the website.

Here’s an example motion.

Motion to lobby the university for free food on campus
Proposed by: John Smith (History, year 2)
Seconded by: Steph Jones (Sports Coaching, year 1)

This Union Notes: Food on campus is extremely expensive and students believe that there should be a selection of free food, subsidized by the university.

This Union Believes: Students are paying a great deal to be here in the first place, then we have to pay rent and buy food at home. Paying for food on campus is just an extra cost that we don’t need. We believe that, particularly for those students who have full days in lectures on campus, we should be given a selection of free meals by the university.

This Union Resolves: We resolve that our union should take action on this matter on behalf of students. Our Students’ Union should lobby the University of Gloucestershire to make all food on campus free of charge for students.
