The first semester has started with a SPLASH for the Swimming and Water Polo Team. Not only did we reach our target number of sign ups, we exceeded it by a mile. With 190 freshers deciding to put their names down at fresher’s fayre. This was down to pure hard work from the existing members and the committee who made the stand as bright and informative as possible and a host of members on hand to give out further advice and home made fairy cakes! A few committee members were even brave enough to sport their university swimming costumes and trunks on what was not the warmest of September mornings!

Obviously we did not expect all 190 freshers to make the first training session, but we were very pleased to have the turn out that we did. The first Sunday session was filled with fun team games and races to allow us to get to know each other, rather than the dreaded trials of other teams, and this allowed us another healthy turn out in the following sessions. It was also an opportunity to use our brand new balls and show off our quality equipment to the new members. We now have a group to be proud of for both the men’s and women’s teams and cant wait to get our teeth stuck into some real competition with the upcoming matches and tournaments (watch out Nottingham Ladies on 25th October!)

Of course all of this hard work deserves some hard celebration and yet again Yates’s have not disappointed us and proven to be wonderful hosts, providing us with a fantastic locations and drinks for our Wednesday night socials. As tradition dictates, the Swimming and Water Polo team and all its new members were out in force dressed as lifeguards for the first social and a good time was had by all. We have since showed off our dressing up talents as Geeks and Nerds and Painters and decorators, showing the other teams and societies how it’s done. Who says the competition is only in the swimming pool?!

All that’s left to say is WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE SWIMMING AND WATER POLO CLUB and we welcome any more students who want to come and give us a try.
