The information provided on this page is aimed to keep you up to date with any changes to employment related issues, such as Minimum Wage, National Insurance, and Tax. The minimum wage is an hourly rate which is set by the government and it is reviewed every year with increases which occur in October. The current minimum hourly rates are stated below; It is illegal for employers to pay below the minimum hourly rate for you age band. Do check your payslips and if your employer happens to be paying too little then have a word with them. Alternatively you could contact the JobShop and we can do it on your behalf. When you turn 16 you are issued with a national insurance number. This is so that when you start working you can start paying national insurance. Everybody who is employed will make national insurance contributions to the government. This is usually deducted automatically from your payslip by your employer. If you loose your national insurance then do check any previous payslips as your number is usually noted on them. Alternatively you can call the national insurance trace line on 0845 915 7006. Everybody who earns money, over a certain amount in a tax year, has to pay income tax. Tax is usually taken directly from your pay packet of which the details should always be on your payslip. To claim the tax you have paid back, you do so through the Inland Revenue and will need a P50 form. For more information on claiming tax back please visit www.direct.gov.uk/studenttaxadvice. What do the following forms mean? P45 - This is given to you by your employer when you finish a job. It details your earnings and tax paid during the current tax year. You then give this form to your next employer. P50 - This form is used when you are claiming the tax that you have paid back from the Inland Revenue. P60 - This is given to you from your current employer at the end of every tax year. This details your earnings and tax paid over the year. It is important to keep your P60 forms safe so that you have a record of all of your earnings. It is also important to keep your P45 safe until you get a new job. Minimum Wage
If you are aged 18-21 then the minimum hourly rate is £4.83 (as of Oct 09).
If you are aged 22 or above then the minimum hourly rate is £5.80 (as of Oct 09).

Tax
You can earn up to £6,035 in a tax year (6th April til 5th April) before you are required to pay income tax. If you earn below £6,035 in a tax year then you will eligable to claim the tax that you have paid back.
