Meningtis Awareness

Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord and can be caused by different organisms, including bacteria and viruses. It can affect anyone, and most importantly, Students and young people are the 2nd highest group at risk from contracting it.

Meningitis can strike quickly, but its impact can last a lifetime. 10% of bacterial cases result in death, with 15% of those who survive bacterial meningitis left with severe after-effects such as brain damage, hearing and sight loss, and where septicaemia (blood poisoning) has occurred, loss of limbs and scarring. Viral meningitis is usually less serious than bacterial meningitis but can still leave people with long-lasting after-effects, such as headaches, fatigue and memory problems.

Signs and Symptoms:

Early symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, muscle pain and fever with cold hands and feet. These are very typical symptoms of a hangover, so it’s important to remember that it might not just be a hangover.  A full list of symptoms is available on Meningitis Now’s Student microsite.
