This summer our GB Women’s Hockey squad flew to the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games for a couple of weeks of heat, humidity and hockey!
After a bronze medal podium finish at London 2012, GB were hoping for a gold medal win at Rio and this is exactly what they achieved. Field Hockey does not get a lot of air time on normal sporting coverage however the Hockey 2016 final was one to be remembered and one that people will talk about for years to come.
The girls got out to a great start beating Australia 2-1 in the first group match, victories over India, Argentina and Japan followed on. Unbeaten in the group stages only meant that the girls went and beat Spain 3-1 in the quarter finals. Semi Final day saw a comfortable 3-0 win over New Zealand, securing them a place in the Olympic final.
The final saw a gripping match with the final finishing 3-3 after a remarkable back and forth game with amazing goals and incredible saves by Maddie Hinch. Penalty shuttles had to be the decider to the final, with GB winning the shootout 2-0 with a deciding goal scored by Hollie Webb.
As a hockey club we are so proud of the GB Women’s Hockey team and the success they have achieved and the history they have created for the sport and providing hope for the future.
We hope here at UOG this may inspire YOU to take up hockey and try something different whilst at university and also back home. We hope to bring the spirit and drive from these Olympics and apply that to our game this season. If you are inspired please get in contact with us for more information about UOGWH!
