Fri 05 Jun 2015 12:00 - Sat 06 Jun 2015 15:00Elwes Reception, Park Campus
The University of Gloucestershire are pleased to be holding its first BioBlitz in collaboration with The Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust as part of the Cheltenham Science Festival and Festival Fortnight. This will be a fun event for all ages that will get you up and close to the nature and wildlife of our Park Campus
What is a BioBlitz?
‘Bio’ means ‘life’ and ‘Blitz’ means ‘to do something quickly and intensively’. Together they make ‘BioBlitz’, a collaborative race against the clock to discover as many species of plants, animals and fungi as possible, within a set location, over a defined time period
A BioBlitz usually comprises a group of scientists, students, naturalists and other members of the public working together. It is an informal and fun way to create a snapshot of the variety of life that can be found in an area. It provides an opportunity for participants to learn together and share their expertise and enthusiasm for nature. This is a great way of breaking down barriers to engagement with science and raising awareness of the role of biological recording. It also gives you an opportunity to contribute to a genuine scientific survey.
First developed by Sam Droege in the USA in 1996, BioBlitzes are now held regularly in many countries and have been taking place in the UK since 2006.
It is an exciting and fun way to explore natural spaces and discover wildlife.
There are plenty of surveys, that you can join in with, going on throughout the day. You don't need to be an expert biologist or have any experience, just come along, get stuck in and help us discover what species we have on our Park Campus.
There will be plenty of other events going on for families and adults.
To guarantee your place on a survey book your place using the booking system on our website. After booking you will receive a confirmatory email detailing your place and what to wear and bring with you.
