Amateur Botanical Society

Hey there!

This is the official amateur botanical society page for UOG! We're a fairly new society, and was originally founded to aid students who wanted to go into a career in the biosciences (especially conservation). However, we welcome students from all courses; no previous botany knowledge needed!

As a new society, we have so many brilliant ideas that we just can't wait to share with you guys. Here's a "little" sneak peak on what's to come...

  • Taking plant samples from nature reserves and/or from university campuses for identification purposes.
  • Finding and recommending certified courses for botanical identification and similar qualifications; finding student prices, or discounts for students.
  • Finding and recommending books/field guides/others that are equivalent for identification purposes.
  • Field trips to local nature reserves.
  • Quiz nights in relation to botany and nature ID.
  • Creating ID guides using flower pressing and online resources.
  • Drawing/sketching/field sketching of botany.
  • “Plant orienteering” (plant hunting using scientific language; ranges in simplicity).
  • Botany history session (medicine, edible wild food).
  • Flower baking (dandelion cookies, jam, etc).
  • Botanical drinks – making and testing (Rekorderlig botanicals cider, Seedlip’s non-alcoholic gin, etc).
  • Homecrafts (lavender pillows, flower crowns etc).
  • The use of botanicals in cosmetics (E.G. Lush).
  • Make your own wildflower garden (Spring!)
  • Botanical documentaries (Netflix based).
  • Creating an herbarium.
  • Volunteering at Glos wildlife trust for conservation planting and other related projects.

And we're more than happy to take idea's from you guys, and have group votes on who wants to do what and when! This is all about your personal development and what you wish to gain from us.
