Hello everyone, I am George Berry and I am privileged to be returning as Sports Officer for the 2020/21 year. Working for UoG SU over the past year and working with all the fantastic members of #teamglos has been a pleasure and I cannot wait to see where we go next. This year will, for obvious reasons, be very different but I will strive to make sure this year is the best we can make it under the circumstances and still allow our teams and clubs to thrive and succeed in whatever BUCS competition comes our way.
Along-side my love for sport I am incredibly passionate about the welfare of our students and their mental health. Having been very open about my battles with mental health, I am a firm believer in breaking the stigma and having a much more open narrative surrounding mental health in the sporting world – particularly in men.
I also make it my aim this year to make sport accessible to all of our students, no matter the level. This means fighting the university on their policy surrounding Wednesday lectures. Currently some students do have Wednesdays off and others don’t. This strikes me as hugely unfair that some students get different opportunities for the same amount of money. I also know how crucial sport is for an individual’s mental health and enjoyment of university through the friendships and bonds people can build. I will also be increasing recreational sport opportunities for those who want more of a social and fun opportunity.
Lastly, I am incredibly proud of UoG and all of our students and courses. One of my aims this year is to ‘Unite UoG’ across all campuses and celebrate all of our students. We should all be incredibly proud of everything we do. After all, once you come to UoG, we all #bleedblue.
