Top Tip #10 - Engage with learning opportunities

You may have noticed the introduction of the university’s new learning analytics project to support your learning, and that an aspect of this project involves capturing your attendance at lectures and other scheduled learning sessions. Learning analytics has been introduced as a supportive - not disciplinary - measure to assist your learning and enable tutors to offer better support. For example, data collected through learning analytics will allow tutors to reach out and offer support if your attendance at lectures and scheduled learning sessions drops below 80% in a semester.

Learning analytics also collects data about library usage, engagement with learning resources such as Moodle, assessments marks and grades. All of this data is already collected by the university, but again, learning analytics will allow tutors to use this data to offer better support. For example, your tutor will be able to see if you haven’t logged onto Moodle for a while and may use this information to contact you and check everything is ok.

The information collected via learning analytics is not part of your assessments. The aim is simply to gather all the key information about your learning in one place and try to catch emerging issues earlier so that you can reach your full potential.  This means that - unless attendance is a professional requirement of your course - if learning analytics shows your attendance at lectures and scheduled learning sessions has dropped below 80%, you won’t be penalised by lower grades, failed assessments or other penalties.

It is important to note that your relationship with your tutor is key to learning analytics. This is because your tutor is unlikely to look at the data collected in isolation. Instead, they will consider the data in the context of what they know about you and your personal circumstances.

Why is attendance at lectures and scheduled learning sessions important?

Attending lectures and scheduled learning sessions regularly and actively engaging with everything your course has to offer ensures you get the best value out of your time at UoG and have the very best chance of succeeding. What’s more, low attendance can have a huge impact on the other students on your course as well as your tutors. How can I register my attendance in lectures and scheduled learning sessions?

When you arrive at your lectures and scheduled learning sessions, your tutor will give you a 4-digit code which you can use to ‘check-in’ on your phone, PC or laptop. If you tend to check-in on your phone, you may want to consider downloading the Study Goal app (more information here) which allows you to register your attendance as well as a whole heap of other cool features. Otherwise, you can use the check-in tile on the MyGlos site to register your attendance instead.

If you do download the Study Goal app, it’s important to note that ‘geolocation’ will automatically be switched on. This only provides a relative measure so if everyone checks-in from one location and someone else checks-in from another, that person is considered absent. It does not provide the university with data on exactly where you are on campus (or beyond). Your geolocation should be provided with your consent and just like any app, you can switch this off. Otherwise you can use a computer to check-in or ask to be registered manually instead.
