Top Tip #5 - Clue up on academic extensions
Whilst we hope you have the best time at university, we understand that sometimes unforeseen circumstances can make submitting assessments on time harder than usual. That’s why the university allows extensions to submission deadlines for extenuating circumstances; but only where approval has been granted in advance of the original due date. You can read more about these extensions, who they apply to and how to access them on the MyGlos Help pages here or take a look at the handy information below.
EC stands for extenuating circumstances and refers to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances that prevent you from submitting your assessment on time.
If you have experienced extenuating circumstances that are affecting your ability to submit an assignment, portfolio, dissertation or major project on time, you can request an EC1 extension of 1 week (5 working days). You can apply for an EC1 extension via Student Records and clicking on ‘request an extension’; once your extension has been approved, the submission date for your assessment will be updated automatically. You do not need to provide evidence for these extensions, but you do need to complete a self-declaration detailing why you have requested the extension.
It is important to note that EC1 extensions cannot be used for presentations, exams or group assessments, or to extend another extension (such as a previous EC1 extension for the same assessment). However, these extensions are separate to any reasonable adjustments you receive due to a disability, such as an additional 7 days to complete assignments.
EC2, DA3 and WA3 Extensions
Sometimes your extenuating circumstances may require more than a week’s extension on your submission deadline, so you can access longer extensions through EC2, DA3 and WA3 extensions. These extensions are normally up to 20 working days and to apply for them you should contact one of the Student Helpzones. You will normally need to provide evidence from an independent third party (such as a GP or medical professional) to support your application for one of these extensions. If you have any questions about these extensions or what evidence you may need, speak to a member of staff in the Student Helpzones.
Please note that these extensions are separate to any reasonable adjustments you may receive due to a disability, such as an additional 7 days to complete assignments. This means that if you receive a reasonable adjustment of an additional 7 days to complete assignments due to a disability, you are still eligible to apply for EC1, EC2, WA3 and DA3 extensions where appropriate.
